Steve Nickles

His own hockey-playing days may be behind him, but Project Manager, Steve Nickles has yet to hang up his skates. For the past six years, Steve has been a hockey referee at the junior (16–20) and college club levels. From September to March, he works games for the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the United States Premier Hockey League and the Eastern Hockey League, refereeing for such schools as Fairfield University, Quinnipiac University, Farmingdale State College and SUNY Maritime.

“I referee as a way to stay involved in the game that I grew up playing,” said Steve. “I was fortunate to have played at a competitive level, and now I still get to go out on the ice and be in the middle of the action.”

Serving previously as Assistant Project Manager and Junior Estimator, Steve worked for Schimenti Construction from 2006–12 and returned to the company in June. He, his wife and two young sons live in South Salem, New York. When he’s not chasing his two-year-old around, he coaches his eight-year-old son’s mite hockey team and cheers him on in tae kwon do, baseball and soccer.

“As entertaining as it is to hear a snarky one-liner from a coach who doesn’t like my call, I don’t have any plans to move up in the refereeing ranks,” said Steve. “I enjoy being around young players and seeing how much they love the sport.”
