Schimenti Construction partners with Nike for certified “green” construction projects

Three Nike stores earn LEED Platinum certification.

Three recently completed Nike stores built by Schimenti Construction have been certified as “green” buildings by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The stores, Nike Flushing (Flushing, NY), Nike Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY), and Nike Newark (Newark, NJ) have all earned a LEED Platinum rating, the program’s highest award.

LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, providing independent verification of a building or neighborhood’s green features. It allows for the design, construction, operations and maintenance of resource-efficient, high-performing, healthy, cost-effective buildings.

A Platinum rating is given to projects that score 80+ points in the LEED rating system.

The Brooklyn, NY and Newark, NJ stores were both built as Nike “community stores” developed to promote neighborhoods by offering jobs to local men and women, provide grants to local non-profits, and integrate the spirit of the community into the store. The Flushing store is an outlet store in Skyview Center and was Schimenti’s first collaboration with Nike.

Schimenti Construction outlined and executed green building principles in all three projects.

The company hired LEED certified waste companies to recycle garbage at specified waste plants, promoted the purchasing of LEED certified construction materials, and worked with Nike’s LEED consultant to submit verifications for LEED points.

“Being able to effectively adapt to the challenge of a green construction process was a source of pride for us,” said Schimenti project manager Joe McGowan. “And it was an honor to be able to work with Nike to achieve the highest possible LEED certifications for these stores.”
