Schimenti Construction unveils first-ever Target store in Manhattan

Schimenti Construction helped Target celebrate the opening of it’s first-ever Manhattan storefront with the unveiling of Target Tribeca at 255 Greenwich Street. New York, NY.

The grand opening of the retail space was celebrated on Oct. 9.  

The approximately 45,000 square foot retail store incudes 9,000 square feet of first-floor space and 36,000 square feet of cellar space.  Target also partnered with Chobani to implement Chobani’s first café location in a Target, consuming 1,100 square feet of space.

Schimenti Construction, founded in 1994, has built a strong reputation in the retail construction industry and has developed a solid niche in urban construction. The firm specializes in developing retail shopping environments for some of the nation’s leading retailers.

The 17-week long Target Tribeca project presented challenges unique to urban retail construction including a bottom floor pressure slab that was below the water table, existing elevator and escalator pits in conflict with existing steel above, and restricted working hours due to local residences.

The Schimenti Construction Company team worked diligently to address design changes, navigate landlord hurdles, and facilitate the coordination of sub-contractors through difficult milestones to ensure a successful opening.

“We had to deal with a number of existing conditions and some complete redesigns during construction,” said Schimenti Project Manager Andrew Heller. “Everything had to be built around the existing elevator and escalator pits. This required extensive field redesigns to make everything work. The team was working seven-day a week for at least two months to meet the soft opening. Overall, to be part of Target’s first-ever Manhattan store has been an extraordinary experience.”
