It was an unusually complicated retail project located in the heart of Manhattan’s super fashionable SoHo shopping district. A one-of-a-kind, “epic” Hollister store conceived by Michael S. Jeffries, chairman and CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch.

Numerous challenges were connected with the construction of the 43,700 square foot, multi-level flagship store housed in a circa 1835, mixed-use landmark building located at the busy intersection of Broadway and Houston Streets.

The Schimenti team addressed a variety of structural and logistical issues in the process of revamping the space, including constructing a unique, four-story “tower staircase” within the building that would serve both functional and decorative purposes; working with a small building footprint that offered no exterior lay down area, conducting all demolition and fit out work with little or no access to a small elevator that also served existing commercial tenants, and devising a plan for just-in-time material deliveries between the City-mandated work hours of 7 am – 6 pm. The job took place over six levels in all, with retail space located in the basement, and on the first, second and third floors; office space in the basement and fourth floor, and storage space in the sub-basement.
