Schimenti Construction delivered the renovation of an existing retail complex into a new 163,000+ SF Target in West Orange, New Jersey. The project reconfigured a multi-tenant space, including a former K-Mart and several other smaller stores, into a modern, full-scale retail environment, bringing a long-anticipated national retailer to West Orange Plaza and marking a major milestone in the property’s ongoing redevelopment.
The scope included a comprehensive interior buildout supported by major infrastructure upgrades, including new rooftop units, generators, transformers, and elevators. Existing building conditions required ongoing coordination and design adjustments to align with current standards, while work progressed alongside broader site improvements tied to the overall redevelopment. Close collaboration across teams helped maintain sequencing and keep the project moving forward.
Additional challenges tied to permitting timelines, utility coordination, and site-wide construction required a highly coordinated approach across all stakeholders. Permanent power remained a key milestone for system startup, commissioning, and inspections, requiring alignment with external utility providers. Despite these factors, the project was delivered on schedule through strong collaboration with the client, design team, and external partners. The result is a fully modernized retail destination that strengthens West Orange Plaza’s position as a leading shopping center in Essex County.
