Schimenti Construction partnered with Dick’s Sporting Goods (DSG) to bring its next-generation retail concept, House of Sport, to Newport Centre in Jersey City. Spanning 85,000 square feet, the project introduces a more immersive and experience-driven approach to sporting goods retail, featuring interactive zones and community-focused amenities that go far beyond a traditional store layout.
This was Schimenti’s first time delivering the House of Sport concept, having previously completed work for the DSG brand. The House of Sport model, first introduced in 2021, combines retail with recreation, featuring elements such as a multi-sport cage (for baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer), golf simulators, and a full-height rock climbing wall capped by a clerestory that offers sweeping views of the city skyline.
The project was completed on schedule, following 38 weeks of construction. Preconstruction efforts began in January, and site work commenced in November. Throughout the process, Schimenti worked closely with the client and design team to navigate the evolving requirements of a concept still in its early rollout phase. New finishes, unfamiliar systems, and owner-supplied components required proactive coordination across vendors and trades.
One of the most complex components of the build was the installation of the clerestory, a rooftop extension above the climbing wall that required opening up the roof while simultaneously preserving a weather-tight environment inside. This phase required precision, close trade collaboration, and strong on-site leadership to keep the finishes progressing while the structural work unfolded above.
Communication with the client remained strong throughout, with DSG placing complete trust in the project team to manage vendor coordination, maintain momentum, and deliver a space that lived up to the brand’s ambitions. The result is a multi-sport destination designed to energize the community and support a diverse range of athletes, adventurers, and everyday customers.
