Schimenti Construction partnered with Live Nation to bring its experiential hospitality concept, The Backyard, to life at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA. Delivered in just 10 weeks, the project transformed a former overflow restroom and beer stand into a fully enclosed VIP space spanning 5,500 square feet. Implemented across several outdoor venues nationwide, the Backyard at Xfinity Center represents the largest build-out of the concept to date.
The scope included complete demolition of the existing area, installation of underground utilities for electrical, water, drainage, and sanitary systems, and site elevation by 18 inches using drainage aggregate to support weather-resilient turf. New steel and masonry structures were built from the ground up, each finished with Live Nation’s selected materials such as corrugated metal panels, composite decking, stone countertops, and concrete pathways, all designed to create an inviting, earth-toned environment.
At the heart of the space is The Cookout, an open kitchen featuring a wood-fired oven. Mechanical coordination was crucial, particularly for the oven’s ducting and exhaust system, which required approvals from both fire safety officials and mechanical engineers. Additional features included custom fencing, swing benches, concrete footings for DJ booths and cabanas, and a fully landscaped layout with turf, retaining walls, and lawn games like cornhole and Jenga.
The project faced several challenges, including a late start, numerous design changes, and complex underground infrastructure. The team also navigated procurement and installation of custom finishes, plumbing fixtures, and lighting, all within a compressed timeline. Daily executive updates and close coordination with the client and design team helped streamline approvals and minimize delays.
Throughout the project, communication with Live Nation remained strong. The client was highly responsive, helping to fast-track decisions and maintain momentum. The completed Backyard delivers a dynamic outdoor hospitality space that enhances the VIP experience at one of New England’s premier music venues.
