- Schimenti Construction recently completed its first store for Primark, an Irish-based discount fashion retailer. Located in the Kings Plaza Shopping Center at 5100 Kings Plaza in Brooklyn, the 80,000-square-foot space is a fit-out of three floors formerly occupied by Sears. The design features custom metal panel storefronts at the five entrances, a spotlighted metal panel façade sign band and escalators with full-height glass partitions.
- Construction began in December 2017 and encompassed a three-floor retail fit-out with one additional floor of back of house, totalling four floors. The project was completed in April 2018 in the face of numerous challenges, many of which stemmed from the Primark fit-out being part of a larger mall expansion project that included a remodel of the exterior, façade and common areas, as well as three other retail fit-outs. The concurrent construction posed major issues, due to the need to coordinate with the landlord’s work, which ran behind schedule. Among the obstacles were a late handover of the space, the discovery of construction-related damage to the space that required re-work, and the landlord’s failure to accurately lay out the lease line and to obtain timely FDNY approvals. Key components, such as the storefront panels and rooftop HVAC units, required substantial lead times. Due to the exterior work, the Schimenti Construction team had limited access to the site and, for the last three weeks, no access at all to freight elevators.
