Schimenti partnered with Wonder, a food delivery platform that connects customers with high-quality chefs and restaurants, to transform a 5,800-square-foot space in Midtown East, New York City. Schimenti’s first collaboration with Wonder delivered a modern dining experience with a 1,500-square-foot seating area for 10 guests and a 4,300-square-foot kitchen and support space, including offices and cleaning facilities.

The kitchen was designed for maximum efficiency and flexibility, featuring an innovative BusSTRUT system that suspends electrical outlets above the workspace. This setup allows for easy reconfiguration of kitchen equipment as needed. Additionally, the project used specialized ventilation systems, avoiding traditional grease ductwork and relying on fryers with built-in fire suppression systems to streamline operations.

The project faced several challenges, most notably delays caused by procuring a key electrical panel. Originally scheduled for delivery in late August, the panel faced manufacturing delays and disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, pushing its arrival to October. To stay on track, Schimenti worked closely with Wonder, the design team, and subcontractors to explore workarounds, ultimately completing the project and handing over the space within 16 weeks.

Another hurdle arose when the rooftop HVAC units were found to be different from the models specified in the project plans. This required a team effort to replace the units as a follow-up project, with input from all stakeholders to ensure the issue was resolved efficiently.

Strong collaboration and clear communication with Wonder’s team were essential throughout the project. The client’s responsiveness and solution-driven approach, combined with Schimenti’s expertise, ensured the build met Wonder’s vision and expectations.
